Normal Vital Signs Values Every Nursing Student Should Know
Assalam-o-Alaikum Friends!
If you are a BSN, Post RN, or Diploma Nursing student, you must know the normal values of vital signs. These values are frequently asked in exams, viva, ward tests, interviews, and clinical practice.
In this post, I am sharing the most important normal values that every nursing student should memorize.
What Are Vital Signs?
Vital signs are measurements that indicate the basic functions of the human body. They help nurses and healthcare professionals assess a patient's health condition.
The main vital signs are:
Temperature
Pulse
Respiration
Blood Pressure
Oxygen Saturation
1. Normal Body Temperature
Normal body temperature in adults is:
36.5°C to 37.5°C
A temperature above the normal range may indicate fever (hyperthermia), while a lower temperature may indicate hypothermia.
2. Normal Pulse Rate
The normal pulse rate for a healthy adult is:
60–100 beats per minute (bpm)
A pulse rate above 100 beats per minute is called tachycardia, while a pulse rate below 60 beats per minute is called bradycardia.
3. Normal Respiratory Rate
The normal respiratory rate in adults is:
12–20 breaths per minute
below 12 ( bradypnea )
above 20 ( tachypnea )
Respiration provides oxygen to the body and removes carbon dioxide.
4. Normal Blood Pressure
The normal blood pressure of an adult is:
120/80 mmHg
below normal ( hypotension )
above normal ( hypertension)
Blood pressure helps assess cardiovascular health and circulation.
5. Normal Oxygen Saturation (SpO₂)
Normal oxygen saturation is:
95%–100%
Low oxygen in tissue ( hypoxia )
Low oxygen in blood ( hypoxemia )
Low oxygen saturation may indicate respiratory or cardiac problems.
Normal Vital Signs
| Vital Sign | Normal Value |
|---|---|
| Temperature | 36.5°C–37.5°C |
| Pulse | 60–100 bpm |
| Respiration | 12–20/min |
| Blood Pressure | 120/80 mmHg |
| SpO₂ | 95%–100% |
Why Are Vital Signs Important?
Vital signs help nurses:
Assess patient condition
Detect early signs of illness
Monitor treatment effectiveness
Identify emergencies quickly
Conclusion
Every nursing student should memorize these normal values because they are commonly asked in examinations, viva, interviews, and clinical settings. Understanding vital signs is the foundation of nursing assessment and patient care.
